Description

"No. 147. Juvenile Recreations on Baldwin's Santa Anita Rancho," originally photographed by Alexander C. Varela, Los Angeles, ca. 1878 and republished by Isaiah W. Taber, San Francisco, ca. early 1880s. The view shows the ranch's lake, in which three persons, presumably juveniles, are rowing in a boat. At the opposite shore are structures, including what is probably the Hugo Reid adobe, built in 1840 by the ranch's first owner, as well as a larger structure to the right. A tall tree and other plants, apparently native, are along the shore, as well. Varela moved to San Jose and worked as a photographer there in 1880, but evidently sold his negatives to Taber before returning to Washington, D. C., where he worked in the federal government system. With slight mount curvature, some soiling and edge rubbing, the overall condition is good.
