"No. 272. Pampas Grass at O.H. Bliss' Residence, Los Angeles, Cal.," originally photographed by Alexander C. Varela, Los Angeles, ca. 1878 and republished by Isaiah W. Taber, San Francisco, ca. early 1880s. The view shows the grass plant at the left along with other plantings in the garden of Oliver H. Bliss, an orchardist who lived on Alameda Street south of Third Street from about 1873 after selling his ferrying business at Kingston in Kings County. Varela moved to San Jose and worked as a photographer there in 1880, but evidently sold his negatives to Taber before returning to Washington, D. C., where he worked in the federal government system. With slight mount curvature, some soiling and edge rubbing, and abrasions at the caption and lower left, which don't materially affect the image, the overall condition is good.Lexicon
