Description
A black and white stereoscopic photograph, "No. 282, Distant View of Sierra Madre Villa, San Gabriel Mission," Alexander C. Varela, ca. 1878. The view is taken from a road several miles southeast of the resort, which is faintly visible in the distance near the haze-shrouded San Gabriel Mountains. Within a few feet of the photographer are a child atop a donkey and another, older child with his right arm resting on the donkey's posterior. It is assumed that Varela staged his photo near the mission identified in the title. With moderate fading mostly to the left of the image, abrasions, and minor soiling, the overall condition is fair.
