"No. 82. View of Los Angeles, Cal.," originally photographed by Alexander C. Varela, Los Angeles, ca. 1878 and republished by Isaiah W. Taber, San Francisco, ca. early 1880s. The view is taken from atop Fort Moore Hill and takes in most of the Plaza area. Notable features include much of the west facade of the Pico House hotel, most of the circular Plaza with small trees, walks and other elements, and the two-story Lugo adobe at the east end of the Plaza. There are also portions of structures in the foreground, the west side of Main Street across from the hotel and farmland and structures toward the Los Angeles River in the background. Varela moved to San Jose and worked as a photographer there in 1880, but evidently sold his negatives to Taber before returning to Washington, D. C., where he worked in the federal government system. With slight mount curvature, some soiling and edge rubbing, the overall condition is good.Lexicon
