Description

"OIL WELLS / LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA," CA. 1905 Color: Black; White A photograph, "Oil Wells, Los Angeles, California," published by The Philadelphia Museums, ca. 1905. The view shows a forest of derricks in the hills surrounding the residential district just northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Several houses are at the center surrounded by well sites. In the foreground are pipes, tools, and other supplies, as well as a few tanks. A caption in white ink is at the lower left of the image and reads "222. Oil Field East From Cor. 1st St. and Belmot Ave. Los Angeles." Printed on the mat below this is a second caption reading "96. OIL WELLS / LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA." The phrase "THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUMS" is at the bottom right. On the reverse is a short essay on the process of extracting and refining crude oil and giving 1902 statistics for U. S. oil production and June 1904 data on exports from the country to other countries. With edge rubbing and chipping, soiling, some discoloration of the image, slight fading of lettering, stains from water, leading to warping, and tears to the mat, the overall condition is good. Number-Units: 1 Print Size: 10"H x 12"W [matted]; 5 1/2"H x 9 1/4" [image]
