Color: Black, white
"Old San Gabriel Mission Regains Long-Lost Bells", Los Angeles Examiner, 9 September 1931. An article regarding the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Mission San Gabriel and the celebration of the restoration of the belfry bells. In two parts: a) the front page section with two large photographs, one showing a woman posed in Spanish costume next to a newly-restored bell and theother a view from the top of the mission looking down on the crowd gathered for the ceremonies; b) the continuation of the article on page 10. Part a) has the masthead for the newspaper and the heading bar with date. The article describes the event, noting that author John Steven McGroarty was the master of ceremonies and that former mission pastor, John J. Matzegui, then-Bishop of Panama, celebrated the pontifical mass. Also described was the presence of native Americans from throughout southern California, one of whom tolled the bells. Music, dancing, horsemanship, a barbeque, a mock bullfight, and a scene from McGroarty's "Mission Play", performed at the Mission Playhouse (now the San Gabriel Civic Auditorium) was presented. With many folds and heavy discoloration, as well as brittleness, the article is in fair condition.Lexicon
