Description

Color: Black; Red; White "On Land and Sea," by William H. Thomes (Boston: DeWolfe, Fiske and Co.,) 1884. The 351-page hardcover book, without a dustjacket, has the title at the top of the front, the author's name at the lower right and an image of a shipmast, palm tree leaves, and a symbol with two guns and a sword crossed within a circular shape. The title, author's last name, and publisher's name are on the spine. The work is a novel, based on the author's early years in California during the 1840s. Thomes was a member of the overland party led by Bidwell and Bartleson, which arrived in northern California from Missouri in early November 1841. There are a few drawings as illustrations and on the front flysheet a stamp from a former owner. With cover edge and corner abrasions; a brittle spine with some separation; dented cover corners; soiling on the cover and page edges; page browning; fading of spine lettering; stains on the cover and fingerprints on pages; tears on the cover cloth; and overall wear, the condition is fair.
