On the back of the front cover is a green label with the name of a former owner. At the beginning are two short biographies called "Pioneers of the Road" and "In Days of Hoofs and Sails." This is followed by a title page, a table of contents, and a list of illustrations. The book documents the evolution of transportation in California and is separated into two parts; the first concerning overland travel and the second relating to travel by sea. Included are eighteen chapters on such subjects as trails, railrods, and steam power. At the end of both parts is an index. The artifact is in good condition with some abrasions and fading of the gold lettering.Lexicon
