Description

Color: col. Picture (a) - figure looking over balcony in gray and green tones, by Puvis de Chavannes, 1898, framed with gray floral mat, wood frame with gold painted trefoil design at corners and on edge. (Note from David Clark 02/12/1998: The original cataloger, unnamed, said the picture was "Art Deco style" but this obviously could not be true of a painting from 1898.) The painting depicts Sainte Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris. A strip of paper adhered to parchment (b) reads "Sainte Genevieve veille sur la (not discernable)ille endormie." The writing is in black ink, faded and in cursive. It may have come with the painting. The paper (b) is in fair condition with moderate yellowing to the paper, some tears, and fading of the ink.
