Description

Color: Black; White A reproduction black and white photograph of eight women college students in the Palm [now Star] Court of Scripps College, ca. 1928. The names are, from left to right, Virginia Bailey; Frances Routt; Evelyn Gunther; Winifred Regleck; Frances McCombs; unidentified; Frankie Fisher; and Dorcas Freeman. Seven of the women are standing with the eighth crouching or kneeling in front behind a potted plant. Most wear dresses or blouses and skirts and a couple wear jackets. They are on a narrow stone walkway that surrounds a tiled area--the image was labeled "Initiating the Pool" by one of the students who provided the original from which this copy was made. Behind them is a building, the Toll Hall dormitory that seems to be of Spanish colonial revival architecture, having a tiled roof, Moorish-influenced balcony details and thick adobe-like walls. This image was obtained as part of a living history character development in 1987 for the museum. On the reverse upper right is a pencil inscription reading "33846 / 9." There are several lipstick smears on the reverse, but the image is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
