Color: Black; White
A reproduction black and white photograph of eight women college students in the Palm [now Star] Court of Scripps College, ca. 1928. The names are, from left to right, Virginia Bailey; Frances Routt; Evelyn Gunther; Winifred Regleck; Frances McCombs; unidentified; Frankie Fisher; and Dorcas Freeman. Seven of the women are standing with the eighth crouching or kneeling in front behind a potted plant. Most wear dresses or blouses and skirts and a couple wear jackets. They are on a narrow stone walkway that surrounds a tiled area--the image was labeled "Initiating the Pool" by one of the students who provided the original from which this copy was made. Behind them is a building, the Toll Hall dormitory that seems to be of Spanish colonial revival architecture, having a tiled roof, Moorish-influenced balcony details and thick adobe-like walls. This image was obtained as part of a living history character development in 1987 for the museum. There are two post-it notes on the back center, one in yellow gives the names of those in the image with the added comment "Initiating the pool . . ." The other, in blue, reads "#9 / Northeast section of / Palm Court (Star / Court currently -1987) ; Toll / Hall. c. 27-28 / probably. Scripps / students." In pencil beneath these is "28170 / 9." With little indication of wear or damage, the image is in good condition.
