Description

PERFORMERS AT THE COURTYARD OF THE HOME OF PIO PICO Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of performers at the courtyard of Pio Pico's home, ca. 1920s. A woman stands in costume at the center in the brick-floor courtyard. She faces to the right and wears a long mantilla, ruffled dress, and holds a closed fan in front of her with both hands. To the far right is a small tree, and to the left is a square-shaped wood well. Across the back are two musicians which wear wide-brim hats, long-sleeve shirts, sashes, and dark pants. The one at the right plays a guitar, and the other a violin. Behind them and to the right sits a row of spectators. At the left of the background are many trees, and to the right is the shingled-roof of the home of which only the top of an arched trellis is in view. At the right of the foreground is the back of a man's head, and to the left is the leg of another man who is out of view. At the center of the back is a stamp with the words, "ANDERSON / Photo Service / EL MONTE." At the top right corner is the number, "3." The photograph was housed in Agnes Temple's album which is item 96.7.94.1 along with many other photographs which span 96.7.1.1-.93.1. Contact sheets 2000.159.1.1-.8 show the original positioning of the images within the album. The artifact has deep stains along the top, though none are on the image itself which makes it in fair condition. Number-Units: 1
