Photograph of a sand wheel in a field, probably in North Hollywood, California, 11 October 1929. The device, with a wooden box on which an apparatus with a wheel is mounted at a 45 degree angle. It sits on a field with piles of sand near it. The sand wheel was used to remove sediment, fine waste, slime and other debris with the sand being rotated by the wheel for the filtration process. On the reverse is an ink inscription: "Sand Wheel / Walter B. Stine / North Hollywood / Calif. / Oct 11 -29." With some album paper residue on the reverse, very light soiling and warping, the condition is good overall.
