PLANTING OF HISTORIC PALM TREE, EAST SIDE OF LA CASA NUEVA
Color: Black; White
A black and white photograph of a historic palm tree planting at the east side of La Casa Nueva, 1925. The tree is attached to a tackle-and-pulley system that lifted it up and set it into place into a hole located near Walter Temple's bedroom at the southeast corner of the house. Two long pieces of wood as braces meet like tent poles and the pulley-wheel is suspended from this apex. Two men, one of whom, on the right, is Frank Romero, ranch foreman and driver for the Temple family, stand holding these wood pieces. Another man is on a saw horse standing near the pulley-wheel, grasping chains. A fourth man stands next to the sawhorse, while a fifth watches from the side at the right next to the eastern side of the Mission Walkway (where it is noted that grape vines grow from the inside of the walkway, next to the columns, whereas today's are on the outside.) In the background is a flatbed truck. To the left is a portion of the house, including the open screen door to the Cold Storage Pantry and part of the Breakfast Room. In foreground right is a large pile of dirt and there are blocks of wood and other debris on the ground. On the reverse upper left corner, in the hand of a former museum curator, is a pencil inscription "source - Bob Brown," while at the lower right corner is a stamped number "48." A pencil inscription at lower left reads "5x7 Sepia." Thomas Temple identified this tree as one from San Gabriel and dated from 1775, before it was moved to the Homestead in 1925. Aside from one creased corner and very light discoloration, the object is in good condition.
