A post-mortem daguerreotype of a baby in a mother's lap, ca. 1850s. The item is a dark brown leather case with a purple velvet lining. The image lying within a gilt oval frame behind glass shows the child, wearing a white dress, reclining in the lap of the mother, whose face is out of view, but who wears a black mourning dress. A gold ring on the mother's finger has been touched-up for visibility. Although the case is badly worn on the outside, the lining, framing, glass and image on the interior are very good, so the overall condition is good.
