Publications of the Academy of Pacific Coast History, Volume 1, Number 4, The Narrative of the Portola Expedition of 1769-1770, Miguel Costanso, ca. 1910. This volume, published by the University of California, Berkeley, contains a reprint of Costanso's original Spanish text and an English translation on opposing pages. Costanso had published the narrative after having travelled as a member of the expedition. Costanso begins with the preparations for the exploration of the coast which were spurred by inspector-general Jose de Galvez and ends by extolling the success of the expedition in creating presidios for the Spanish crown in San Diego and Monterey. Brief, handwritten notes and underline marks are present. The cover of the periodical (b) has become detached from the pages. With major tears, moderate discoloration, and minor stains, the cover is in poor condition overall. While the rest of the pages are bound together, they suffer from a lack of support. With minor foxing, minor discoloration, and no cohesive spine, the pages of the volume are in fair condition overall.Lexicon
