Description
Publications of the Academy of Pacific Coast History, Volume 2, Number 3, Expedition to San Francisco Bay in 1770: Diary of Pedro Fages, ca. 1911. This short volume, published by the University of California, Berkelely and edited by Herbert Eugene Bolton, contains a transcription of the diary written by Fages, who became the lieutenant governor of Alta California in 1770. The transcription is preceded by an introduction from Bolton which explains that Fages led the expedition of explorers from Monterey to the San Francisco Bay in 1770, making it likely to be the "first exploration" of that stretch of land (at least by the Spanish). Bolton also suggests that the journey had likely been initiated by Fages' own accord. The volume includes both a transcription of the original Spanish text and an English translation on opposing pages. Two dates listed within the periodical have been revised with pen. With minor discoloration, minor stains, and moderate tears along the spine of the cover, the object is in good condition overall.
