"Annual Publication of the Historical Society of Southern California, Volume 4, Numbers 1-3, 1897-1899," printed by California Voice Print for number 1 in 1898 and an unknown printer for numbers 2-3, 1899-1900. The green clothbound volume with speckled paper has gold printing on the spine with the organization name and publication years. The three complete publications are bound inside, including the original wrappers. At the beginning is a complete list of contents for the volume. The first number contains 99 pages and includes lists of officers of both societies, reports from committees and officers, and a sketch on the founding, the constitution, by-laws, and membership roll of the new Pioneer Society. There are a dozen articles on regional and state history, as well as a few sketches of local notables, most recently deceased. The second number has 85 pages and also has lists of officers and various reports from the societies. There are fourteen historical articles and several more biographical sketches. The third number has 96 pages and contains thirteen articles, ten biographical sketches, officer lists of the two societies, the Pioneer Society constitution, by-laws, and a membership list. At the inside front cover of the volume is the ex-libris label of a former owner. With little evidence of use and, therefore, of wear, the artifact is in good condition.Lexicon
