Description

Color: Black; White A black and white copy negative of the Puente train station, 1895. The station, built to serve the Southern Pacific Railroad line, was probably a newly finished replacement for the original, built in 1874. The waiting room and offices occupied the left side of the structure and the loading platform and warehouse at the right. Three signs are visible, two of which can be read, one indicating the Wells, Fargo & Co. Express office and other reading, "PUENTE/TO SAN FRANCISCO 501 MILES." The cargo pole is seen on the platform and a power pole seen at far left. In the foreground on or near the tracks are seen a dozen people, all men except for two boys. The stationmaster is seen closest to the camera in uniform. At right are two men wearing boxing gloves and in fighting position. Some cargo carts are seen at left next to the building and vaguely seen buildings at left background showing where the town was. As a newly created copy negative of print 96.49.1.14, the artifact is in mint condition. Number-Units: 1
