Description

Color: Green; Red; White; Yellow "Puritan: A Book of Recipes," issued by the Cudahy Packing Co., fall 1928. The front cover of the 26-page document is largely red with a green border. At the center is a color image of a Puritan man standing over and talking to and gesturing at a Puritan woman seated near a loom. Behind the two is a large fireplace. A caption reads "Why don't you speak for yourself, John?" At the bottom is the artifact's title. A title page has a different title: "A Story of Puritan: 'First in the Land'", after which is a facsimile of a Good Housekeeping seal of approval document, dated 16 October 1928. A short foreward is then followed by, from page six, a short history of the Puritans, through page 10, illustrated by color images. On page eleven is a color image of a wrapped ham and a tub of lard, produced by the Cudahy Packing Co. From page 12 are descriptions of rolled ham, ham selection, Puritan lard, and frying fat. Starting on page fourteen are ham-based recipes. On page nineteen are images of Puritan bacon, followed by descriptions of the product and recipes based on Puritan bacon, ham, and lard. The back cover has the company name and logo, as well as a color image of Puritans walking on a snowy path. With abrasions along the spine, creases on the cover, light cover soiling and slight edge wear, the artifact is in good condition.
