Description

Railroad workers at the Santa Susana tunnel near Chatsworth, California, ca. 1903. The image shows thirteen men on or near a wooden flatcar on the track the leads into the tunnel, which enters the mountains in the background. A signal, small wooden shet, wooden beams and other material for the track are also in view. An ink inscription on the reverse reads "Bridge going out Chatswirth / Tunnel No. 10 / 30 miles from Los Angeles." Pencil inscriptions correct the spelling of the name and also include a crossed out "1893" replaced by "1903-4." Though the photo is likely a later reprint, it is not known how old it is. With the upper left corner missing, adhesive residue on the corners of the reverse and some soiling, the overall condition is good.
