"Ready for Irrigation, Sunny Slope, San Gabriel, Los Angeles Co., Cal. 4804," Carleton Watkins, ca. 1879. The image, from Watkins' new series, shows the ground in the alley between the row of mature trees prepared with banks for irrigation at the Sunny Slope ranch of L. J. Rose. On the reverse is an ink inscription: "Orange Grove at Sunny Slope / San Gabriel, Los Angeles Co., Cal. / about 10 miles from Los Angeles City G. H. I saw it & / ate Oranges under the trees." With some significant damage covering the lower portion of the right image and lesser damage on the lower right of the left image, largely not distracting, as well as edge rubbing and light soiling, the condition is fair.Lexicon
