RECEIPT FOR BOARD OF LAURA GONZALEZ, 15 AUGUST 1885

A receipt for the board of Laura Gonzalez at what was probably the Sisters of Charity School, Los Angeles, 15 August 1885. The preprinted form has space for a receipt number at the top left, which was mistakenly filled in with the dollar amount ($51.50) paid. After the city and state ("Los Angeles, Cal."h) is the date. Below this is a line for the name of the payer, in this case, "Mrs. Valenzuela." Further below is the dollar amount paid and the description "for three Months Board in adv. / for Miss Lorenza Gonzales." At the lower right is the signature of Sister Josephine, presumably from the Sisters of Charity. At the lower left is a box for the dollar amount paid, as expressed numerically. Below this is the name of the printer, Hellman, Stassforth & Co. of Los Angeles. At the left is an image with heavily stylized ornamentation of a train on a track. With major acid burning at the upper left, center, and right, a missing lower right corner, creasing, and three vertical folds, the overall condition is poor.Lexicon
