Masonic sash, ca. 1850s. The sash may have belonged to either William H. Workman (1839 - 1918) or David Workman (1797 - 1855). The pale blue sash appears to be made of silk, with silver braided tassels; silver lined edges to the sash; Masonic star emblems; a circular ribbon made of blue lace. The sash was hand stitch with the blue and white threading still visible on the underside of the sash. The blue color may signify that the wearer held the level of Master Mason. It is the supereme color of the Free Masons and often must be revered by a craftsman Mason. The Masonic symbolism of the color blue ranges from perfection, truth, immortality and Deity. There is staining to the sash, creasing, moderate discoloration to the silver tassles, but otherwise in good condition.Lexicon
