Description

RELAYING OF BRICK, UPPER EAST WALL OF WORKMAN HOUSE Color: Brown A color polaroid photograph of the relaying of brick at the upper east wall of the Workman House after the collapse of the original adobe wall, 1 June 1977. At the top of scaffolding are two bricklayers working on the wall with piles of brick to be laid still on the scaffolding platform. Above the workers is the hole to be filled and temporary wood supports are visible both horizontally and vertically placed. Here pieces of thin rebar extend vertically for support of the brick wall. At the cornice, most of the original wood brackets are in place, though a section at right of perhaps six to eight brackets is missing. Below and behind the scaffold is the outer section of the first floor wall with cement block replacing the original adobe, some of which was used on the inside. The as-found gray shingled roof, which is missing the original chimneys, is above the wall. An inscription in pencil at the bottom of the artifact reads "East Wall Continues Brick At / Upper Level / 6/1/77." At the bottom left is the pencil inscription "8x8," which refers to 99.5.14.292. On the lower part of the reverse is a third pencil inscription, but the meaning is unclear. With little indication of wear or damage, the object is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
