Description

Color: Black A Remington No. 2 manual typewriter, 1878. The machine is black with the name of the manufacturer written in gold lettering on a base below the keyboard and along the paper support at the top. The top row of the keyboard has numbers. There are two shift keys, one at the bottom left, and another at the top right. Behind the keyboard are the words "REMINGTON STANDARD TYPEWRITER / Manufactured by / WYCKOFF SEAMAN & BENEDICT, ILION, NEW YORK, U. S. A." A numbered pitch scale is along the top, at the front of the paper bail. Equipment such as a platen return handle, paper release lever, and the printing unit are also throughout the top. The model number "83660" is on a small plaque at the far right corner behind the platen. A bell that signals the end of a margin is at the back of the typewriter. Along the bottom back are the words "This machine is protected by / Sixty-Seven American and Foreign Patents." Introduced in 1878, this was the first typewriter model able to type upper and lower case letters. With abrasions, some corrosion to exposed metal, soiling, flaking of the paint, a missing "H" key, and fading of the gold lettering, the artifact is in fair condition.
