Description

"REMINISCENCES OF A RANGER OR EARLY TIMES IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA" Color: Gold; Green "Reminiscences of a Ranger or Early Times in Southern California" by Horace Bell (Los Angeles: Yarnell, Caystile & Mathes, 1881), 457 pp. A hardcover book in green cloth with gold lettering and black detailing. The front cover has, in gold ink, an image of a mission-like structure near mountains and a cactus, over which are a gun and a knife crossed. Below this, at an angle within a heavily-stylized design, is the title of the book, under which is an image of two men, holding knives in a fight and two horse riders in the background near more mountains. Under this design is the author's name while at the top and bottom are alternating designs of four circles and x-shapes with solid black lines above and below. The spine has pairs of gold lines at the top and bottom with the book title and author's name in gold letters toward the top. The work is a lively history of Los Angeles told by the author, who arrived in the city in 1853 and joined the Los Angeles Rangers military company and served as an attorney and newspaper editor in later years. Most notable in the work are his accounts of various personages, crimes and vigilantism, and his descriptions of ethnic tensions. There are no illustrations, nor is there an index to the book, of which first editions are rather rare. This copy is in good condition with some wear to the cover edges and very light page discoloration, though the cover was treated with shoe polish by the dealer to enhance its appearance.
