Description

Report for California war claims, Rep. Com. No. 242, 32nd Congress, 1st Session, Senate, 27 May 1852. The 2-page document concerns claims by William Money of San Gabriel seeking compensation for 45 horses and personal property seized by order of General Stephen W. Kearney or destroyed by Indians that Money claimed were empowered by Kearney to prevent travelers from going to Sonora, Mexico, which is where Money was headed in November 1846 from Los Angeles. Money claimed that Indians destroyed 20 years of valuable papers, maps, drawings and paintings compiled for publication on the geology, geography and other aspects of the region. The committee, however, noted that there was no proof of Kearney having empowered the Indians as described in the complaint and also that suspicion was cast on the horse claim because the dollar value of $40-50 was erased and increased to $100 per head, when the going rate at the time was said to be $25. With loose pages, as disbound, foxing, stains and soiling, the condition is fair.
