"Report of the Secretary of the Interior, Communicating a copy of the report of William Carey Jones, special agent to examined the subject of land titles in California," 31st Congress, 1st Session, Senate Ex. Doc. No. 18, 30 January 1851. The item is Carey's report of his trip to California in the summer and fall of 1849 concerning the process and validity of Spanish and Mexican-era land titles, which Jones determined to be uniformly valid. There is reference to the granting of Alcatraz Island to Francis P. Temple (rather than William Workman, information evidently gleaned from Jones's brother-in-law, John C. Fremont) and unnamed grantees to San Clemente Island. A list of all California land grants found in the Monterey archives, listed alphabetically by grantee, is an appendix, as are many transcription of documents relevant to land grants. With heavy browning, creases, liquid stains, soiling, and foxing and as disbound from a larger document, the condition is fair.Lexicon
