Description

"Report of the Secretary of the Treasury" concerning security and collection of the revenue in California, Ex. Doc. No. 82, 31st Congress, 1st Session, 18 September 1850. The item discusses the issues related to the collection of taxes and other forms of revenue especially in light of the discovery of gold and the ensuing Gold Rush. Another topic was about establishing collections districts, including the San Diego district, which would have included San Pedro's customs house near Los Angeles with one inspector at a rate of pay at $4 per day. The suggestion, made by Gilbert Rodman, made special note of California's potential importance for Pacific trade, including Asia, South America, Australia and islands in the Pacific and Indian oceans and that it would derie more customs and revenue than any American port, excepting New York. Elsewhere, a suggestion to establish lighthouses on the coast, included a recommendation for one at "Point Vicente" or "Vermine," the latter being "Fermin" near San Pedro. With foxing, small stains, soiling and browning, the condition is fair.
