Description

REPRODUCTION PHOTO, LOS ANGELES PLAZA, CA. EARLY 1870s Color: Black; White A reproduction photograph of a ca. 1873 image of the Los Angeles Plaza and area north and west by the Graham Photo Co., reproduced probably after 1918 (see item .2 for explanation.) The image is reproduced on an 8x10 sheet with a folded edge that has two holes punched in it. The actual image, done in a panoramic form is almost 3x9. At the lower center and right is the northwest corner of the then square shaped plaza including a wooden fence and lamp at the northwest corner. To the left is Main Street and the Plaza Church. New High Street branches off from Main north of the church and Olvera Street is at the far right. Adobe buildings seem to predominate among the structures in view. At the far left and center are the hills now comprising the Elysian Park and Griffith Park areas, while the Verdugo Mountains are at the far right background. A caption in white pencil at the lower right of the image reads "Early view looking North over Plaza / Graham Photo Co / Special X2." The presence of the 1864 tower on the church and absence of the 1874 streetcar tracks on Main seem to indicate an early 1870s date. With corner rubbing, creases at the bottom left corner, some soiling, minor yellowing, and light stains on the back, the condition is good. Number-Units: 1 Print Size: 8"H x 10"W (image is 2 3/4"H x 9 1/8"W)
