REPRODUCTION PHOTO, PERSHING SQUARE (CENTRAL PARK) AREA, 1882
Color: Black; White
A reproduction photograph of an 1882 image of the Central Park area of Los Angeles by the Graham Photo Co., unknown reproduction date, but after 1918 because of the reference to Pershing Square, which was renamed then. The image is reproduced on an 8x10 sheet with a folded edge that has two holes punched in it. The actual image, done in a panoramic form is 3 1/2 x 91/2. Central Park is at the center bounded by 5th and 6th and Hill and Olive streets. It has fencing, bordering trees, wide sidewalks, trees and shrubs and, possibly, lawns. Surrounding the park are residences, with no hint of the commercial development that came later. To the south of the park is an entire block with plantings, but no structures. St. Vincent's College is catty-corner to the park to the southeast. In the distance are open farming areas leading toward the Los Angeles river. At the lower left is a caption in white pencil reading "1882 - Looking Southwest across Pershing Square / Graham Photo Co." With light corner rubbing, some soiling, light yellowing, and a brown stain at the left edge, the condition is good.
