Description

Color: Black; White "Roses for the Home," a bulletin for farmers issued by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, 1931 printing of a 1921 revised edition. The 37-page artifact, number 750 in a series of Farmers' Bulletins, has that information, along with the department's name at the top, under which, in black letters, is the title. This is over a photograph of an image of two roses, while the department's logo is at the lower right. Page two, on the inside front cover, reprints part of a speech made by the agriculture secretary in 1920, explaining that growing roses moves beyond the necessaries of life, such as food, clothing and shelter, and into the pleasures of life, of which roses are the most decorative of plants for this purpose. Contents are listed on page three and include an introduction; roses for the lawn and border; roses for the arbor and trellis; roses for cutting; roses for other ornamental purposes; cultural practices and a summary. There are also many black and white photographs and drawings showing roses in gardens and recommended practices for planting and pruning. At the end is a discussion on diseases and maintenance, while the back cover provides a list of executives in the agriculture department at the time of the last printing, which was in 1922. At the top center of the cover is the penciled number "118." In good condition, the artifact has creases and dog-eared corners on the cover, but no other signs of wear or damage.
