Color: Black; White
A negative of a black and white photograph of the Rowland Hotel in Puente, ca. 1880s. The wood two-story structure stands alone on a lot and is accessed by a circular driveway. It has a raised foundation and a stairway leading to the porch, upon which are many people standing and sitting. The second floor has two visible gabled sections on the south and east sides and a concial-shaped tower at the southeast section. There are a few persons standing on the balcony on the south or front elevation of the second floor. In the foreground, at the end of the porch steps and on the driveway is a carriage drawn by two horses with a rider in the front seat. In the right background is wood framing, evidently for a water well, and across the back a small hill. The hotel was built in 1885 or 1886 by the promoters of the Puente townsite and was razed in 1956. For a brief time in the 1920s, the structure and lot were owned by Walter P. Temple. With no signs of wear, the negative, with a corresponding print as 99.5.11.242, is in good condition.
