Description

Color: Black; White A negative of a black and white photograph of hay bailing at the Rowland Ranch, ca. 1890s. A man in a hat is at the far left holding a pitchfork and standing on a stack of hay. In front of the haystack are three more men wearing hats. Two of them stand side-by-side with the third mounted on a crate holding the long handle of a tool in his hands. Sitting in front of these men is a group of seven children by two bales of hay. In the center is a horse, evidenly attached to an unseen vehicle, and to the right is a man driving a bale-filled wagon pulled by a team of three horses. On the far right is another wagon between two horses, which are feeding on the hay beneath them. In the center background is a gentle sloping hill with a fence and trees, while behind the fence is a three-story water tower and a windmill. In the distance on the far right are trees and homes. With no signs of wear, the image, which has a corresponding print in 99.5.11.247, is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
