Color: Black; White
A stereoview of the Mission San Gabriel, by Thomas E. Stanton, ca. 1880. The card has the dual image of the south elevation of the structure taken from the west on Mission Dr. A row of trees and a white picket fence cover the lower section of the belfry and church, but the top of the former, with part of the largest bell visible and a cross at the apex, and sections of the roof and buttresses of the church are above the trees. The view on the right shows more of the west side of the mission complex, including a small section of the rectory roof, but another large tree obscures most of this section. In the foreground is the wide dirt Mission Dr. Stanton's name is on the side edges. At the bottom right is "Los Angeles, Cal.," while the name "San Gabriel Mission" is written in pencil at the lower left. There are some decorative flourishes, including a cross and leaf-and-vine designs on the front. At the upper left of the reverse is a book-shaped stamp for the store of John R. Meister, bookseller, stationer, and confectioner and his Los Angeles address. Stanton can be dated as working in Los Angeles from 1880. With corner abrasions, edge creases, dents on the edges and corners, some soiling and darkening, a loss at the top left corner, and small tears on the edges, the overall condition is good.Lexicon
