SANTA FE RAILROAD BROCHURE ON SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, 1928
Color: Blue; Orange; White
A pamphlet on Southern California issued by the Colonization Department of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad, 1928. The front cover has the words "SOUTHERN / CALIFORNIA" at the top, the first in orange and the second in white letters. Below this is a portion of the railroad logo (continued on the back panel), partially superimposed over a colored photographic image of a woman holding a basket of citrus fruits, probably oranges. Behind and next to her are portions of fruit trees. At the bottom is the name of the issuing department for the railroad. The back panel is nearly identical, including the continuation of the company logo, but the photograph is of water spilling from a dam. Stamped in red at the center is a label for a Tacoma hotel travel bureau. The inside is paginated, so there are 32 total pages on panels as the work is unfolded. The major portion is titled "Southern California for the Settler," outlining the benefits, economically, climactically, socially, for living in the southern California area. The economic aspect is particularly highlighted in sections concerning agriculture and the five counties (Los Angeles, San Bernardino, San Diego, Riverside and Orange) covered. As the artifact is fully opened, a map of most or all of these counties, with the addition of Imperial, is provided with company rail lines highlighted in orange. With some abrasions, creases, light soiling, and light wear, the item is in good general condition.Lexicon
