"Santa Monica Wharf, California," a reprinted photograph by Purviance Photo, New York, from an original done about 1875. The view shows the curved pier extending from the beach out a few hundred feet into the Pacific Ocean. At the ocean end is the wharf building with some small ships tied nearby. Heading toward shore from the wharf is a train consisting of a locomotive and four cars from the Los Angeles and Independence Railroad Company, founded by F. P. F. Temple and mainly financed by U.S. Senator John P. Jones. On the reverse is an inscription in German "Californien / Sta. Santa Monica varf. Califor." and what appears to be a name. With some warping, abrasions, soiling, and edge wear, the general condition is good.Lexicon
