Description

"Scientific American," 28 February 1863 (Vol. VIII, No. 9, New Series). The popular periodical has material on a rotary spader, a clothes-dryer to be hung out a window, distilling, new discoveries and inventions, a list of patent claims, and other material. A notable feature is for "Scollay's Patent Air-Tight Deodorizing Burial-Case," invented by a St. Louis doctor and spurred on by the large numbers of dead from the ongoing Civil War. Two figures, including a cross-section drawing of the case, accompany the article. With some foxing, stains, soiling, rubbing and pages loose from disbinding, the condition is good.
