Description

Color: Black; White A scrapbook containing serialized articles from the Los Angeles Evening Herald and Express called "The City That Grew" by Boyle Workman, as told to Caroline Walker, ca. 1945. The album is imitation black crushed leather with an unidentified embossed logo above center on the front cover. The logo has two lions on their hind legs supporting a letter "K" within a circle and standing atop a crest with a cross and other symbolic designs. Toward the bottom is a banner with open books on the ends and athletic scenes in six boxes in between. A paper label at the center has the ink inscription "THE CITY / THAT / GREW." Another label on the inside front cover reads, in ink, "MARY HAMMEL NELSON / IN MEMORY / OF / MY HUSBAND / FILMORE NELSON / 1876-1944." Pasted onto the pages of the three-ring binder are what appears to be the complete serialized run of "The City That Grew" series. Among the many illustrations are black and white photographs, maps and drawings, many of which do not appear in the book version. It is possible that the album was put together before Mr. Nelson's death, but it seems likely it was done so afterward. Copies of the book are in the museum's special collections and research library. There is considerable discoloration from adhesives and paper acids and the covers have become separated, so the artifact is in poor condition.
