Description

Color: Black; White A black and white reproduction photograph of a dinner including Scripps College students and faculty, Watkins Garden, 6 June 1928. Four long tables with white tablecloths and wood chairs flanking them are in the garden. Students and faculty are intermixed at the tables and are seen from an upper story of the building, perhaps Toll Hall, adjacent to the garden. At the upper right, two men in costume hold banjos and were obviously the evening's entertainment. A variety of palm trees, bushes, shrubs, grass, paving stones and other elements constitute the visible part of the garden with a wood fence at the top. The photographer's name and date of the image are toward the lower left but not in the corner. It is presumed this was an end-of-the-year dinner at the conclusion of the first year in the school's existence. Ada Watkins Hatch, a member of the first class, provided the original source for this image as part of the development of a living history character for the Homestead. On the reverse center are two post-it notes with inscriptions--these are removed and filed in the accession file. The upper, which is yellow, reads "Watkins Garden / 1st walled garden in / Claremont / Built by Ada Watkins Hatch's / mother & grandmother." The lower, which is blue, reads "#16 Dinner in Claremont / area June 6 1928 / Scripps students & faculty." Under these, in pencil, is the inscription "170 / 16." With little indication of wear or damage, the artifact is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
