Description

Color: Black; White A black and white reproduction photograph and copy of the first class of Scripps College, posed at Toll Hall, 1927. The 51 girls are in the loggia of the courtyard of the building under or around three arches with support columns topped by Ionic capitals. About 17 of the women are seated on the ground with five at left kneeling. The rest stand. There is a set of double doors at the center with a large ceiling lamp hanging in front of them. On the face of wall above the center arch is a circular wreath design of fruits with a shell in the center. It appears the floor of the front of the structure is flagstone and hints of trees, grass, and bushes are in the foreground. The Eleanor Joy Toll Residence Hall is shown in a floor plan in images .1031 and .1032. Ada Watkins Hatch, a member of the first class, provided the original source for this image as part of the development of a living history character for the Homestead. On the reverse center of one copy is the pencil inscription "28170 / 8." Attached to the back of the second, and removed for filing in the accession file, was a post-it note in blue ink from the museum staff member who did the research with the inscription "#8 Palm Court (Star Court / currently - 1987), an / innter courtyard of / Toll Hall. This is / the 1st class at / Scripps c. 1927-28. / Photo was taken at / south side of courtyard." With little or no indication of wear or damage, the artifact is in good condition. Number-Units: 2
