Description

Color: Black; White A reproduction black and white photograph of two Scripps College students standing next to a saloon prop at a party, ca. 1928. On the left is Isabel Smith, wearing a knee-length coat, dark dress, shoes, and cloche hat, and holding a dark handbag in her left hand. Marge Townsend, on the right, wears a gray knee-length coat, similarly-colored cloche hat, dark shoes and, it appears, a light-colored dress. She holds a clutch purse in both hands. Both lean against the "bar," which sits on a mosaic tile fllor. Behind them is a painted backdrop with liquor bottles and signs. The Scripps college student who loaned the original image for reproduction indicated the party was probably held at neighboring Pomona College. The image was part of research in 1987 for a museum living history character. There are two post-it notes on the back, one in yellow reads "Isabel Smith, Marge Townsend / left to right." The other, in blue, reads "#21 / Scripps (?) students / presumably at a / college party. Most / likely held at Pomona / College c.-1927-28." At the center of the reverse, under these, is the pencil inscription "170 / 21." With little indication of wear or damage, the artifact is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
