Description

SECTION OF 1920S PIPE FENCING IN EL CAMPO SANTO Color: Green; Red A color photograph of a section of 1920s pipe fencing in El Campo Santo, ca. 1977. The close-up shows a vertical support post embedded amongst some brick and covered by an unidentified vine. A horizontal bar of pipe spans left to right near the top of the photograph. In the background is part of a sidewalk and grassy area in the cemetery, though it cannot be determined precisely which side of the grounds this section was located. On the reverse upper center and right is an inscription in ink reading "Cemetery befor [sic] demo." The pipe fencing is from the 1920s restoration of the cemetery by the Temple family and the brick may be remnant from the circa 1903 demolition of the site and possibly dates to the Workman family construction of the wall about 1860. See item .1008, however, for a view that shows a brick base to a part of the fencing and item .1009 with the pipe fence and no brick--the brick may be from the 1920s as well. Aside from an unknown substance adhered to the upper right corner of the reverse and some discoloration at the reverse lower edge, the artifact is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
