Description

SECTION OF 1920S PIPE FENCING IN EL CAMPO SANTO--EAST SIDE Color: Black; Green; Red A color photograph of a section of 1920s pipe fencing on the east end of El Campo Santo, ca. 1977. The image shows the vine-covered pipe fence with a ball-topped vertical post embedded in a partially damaged brick base. The brick base is nine-levels high, except that at the support and to the right, the upper levels have been knocked loose. In the background are arbor vitae bushes and their proximity to the fence indicates that this is the eastern side of the cemetery. In the foreground are weeds growing on the outside of the grounds. On the reverse is an inscription in ink reading "cemetery wall." An examination of items .1007 through .1009 shows the pipe fence with both brick bases and without. While it is certain that the pipe fence was added in the 1920s in the Temple family's restoration, it is not certain if the brick dates from the Workman construction of the original cemetery wall about 1860 or from the 1920s. While there is an area at the top of the reverse with discolored adhesive from a photo album, the print is otherwise in good condition. Number-Units: 1
