Description

"Sixth Annual Report of the State Mineralogist," California State Mining Bureau, Sacramento: J.J. Ayers, Supt. State Printing, 1886. Among the contents is an essay about the origins of the name of California, providing the original Spanish and an English translation of a 1521 work published in Madrid discussing the "island called California" which was inhabited by black women and no men, with men and baby boys killed by feeding them to griffins (a representation of these animals are carved in beams in the La Casa Nueva Main Hall.) Other material includes general mining conditions; building materials; tables of altitudes for locations in the state; water power and irrigation; mineral springs; a travelogue of San Diego County with a foldout map of the Julian area, known for its mines; minerals in the state; reports on mining activity by county; bullion production for the year and other statistics; mine drainage; mill mechanics and machinery; American mineral production for 1885; American mining laws; legal distances in the state; routes of travel and distances in California; and an index. Lacking wrappers, with a loose block of text and a loose title age, with generally clean pages, the condition is poor.
