Description

"SKETCH OF THE BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES," JANUARY 9, 1847 Color: Black; White A lithographed map of the Battle of Los Angeles by A. Kobbner, from a sketch by Emory, January 9, 1847. The image, consisting of page 517 of a report as indicated from the upper right, is enclosed within a simple border. At the bottom left is the title reading "SKETCH / OF THE / BATTLE / OF / LOS ANGELES / UPPER CALIFORNIA, / fought / between the Americans and / Mexicans / Jany 9th 1847 / from a sketch of / Emory." The orientation of the map is westward with the Los Angeles River running horizontally across the top. At the left is the notation of the American camp after the battle. At the upper right is the location of Los Angeles. At the center is the main battlesite showing the position of American forces with an enclosure of 100 wagons and cattle, as well as the initial and second positions of the Mexicans and the two lines of charge attempted by them upon the Americans. At the bottom is a notation of the American advance from their camp to battle. It was after this conflict that William Workman helped bring the flag of truce to the American camp on the 10th. He also arranged with Commodore Robert F. Stockton on the 5th an amnesty for Californios fighting in this battle and sheltered fleeing Californios from the battle at his home. With light soiling, slight yellowing, a center vertical fold and small tears from disbinding, the document is in good condition.
