"SKETCH OF THE PASSAGE OF THE RIO SAN GABRIEL," JANUARY 8, 1847
Color: Black; White
A lithographed map by P. S. Duval of the passage of the San Gabriel River, from a sketch by Emory, January 8, 1847. The image, consisting of page 517 of a report as indicated from the upper right, is enclosed within a simple border. At the upper left is the title reading "SKETCH / OF THE / PASSAGE / OF THE / RIO SAN GABRIEL / UPPER CALIFORNIA, / by the Americans / discomffiting the opposing Mex. Forces / Jany 9th 1847 / from a sketch by Lt. Emory." The orientation of the map is westward with the river running horizontally across the area just below center. Below this is an approaching road and the location on it of the advancing American troops. Across the river, on the west bank, are positions of two cavalry components, as well as the artillery and cavalry reserve and this area is denoted as area C, identified as the camp after the battle. On a bluff overlooking the river to the west is area A., noted as the Mexican camp after the battle with a notation that, during the night, they retreated toward area B. at the top of the image and on the way to Los Angeles, where the Battle of Los Angeles (see item 1.1 and 2003.257.1.1) was fought the next day. William Workman helped bring the flag of truce to the American camp on the 10th. He also arranged with Commodore Robert F. Stockton on the 5th an amnesty for Californios fighting in this battle and sheltered fleeing Californios from the battle at his home. With minor surface soiling; slight yellowing; flaking on the left edge; a vertical center fold; minor foxing; and tears on the left from disbinding, the condition is good.Lexicon
