Description

"SOME REASONS WHY THE INDEPENDENT VOTER SHOULD NOT SUPPORT GOV. AL SMITH FOR PRESIDENT" Color: Blue; White "Some Reasons Why the Independent Voter Should Not Support Gov. Al Smith For President," a pamphlet issued by the Hoover Club of Nashville and printed by Rich Printing Co., ca. 1928. The artifact has a light blue cover with a simple dual-line border on the front, within which is the title and two leaf designs at the top and bottom. On the center of the back cover is "COMPLIMENTS OF / HOOVER CLUB / OF NASHVILLE," the name of the printer, and the logo of the union that printed the object. The introductory paragraph asserts that Smith was the nominee of anti-Prohibitionists, rather than the rank-and-file Democratic Party, and was anti-American for his support of overturning the 18th Amendment. Other subheadings are "Smith's Supporters;" "Home Life and Children;" "Illiteracy;" "Unrestricted Immigration;" "Health;" "Employment;" "Hoover on Agriculture;" and "Can We Tie the Hands of a President?" This last section argues that Smith could not be prevented from ending Prohibition and "can nullify every law of our land as he has nullified national laws in New York by refusing to uphold the National Government." In good overall condition, the document has acid burns on the back cover; minor foxing and acid burns on the front cover; overall light soiling and small tears at the left of the back cover.
