Description

SOUTHEAST GATE TO THE MISSION WALKWAY AND LA CASA NUEVA Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of the southeast gate of the Mission Walkway and La Casa Nueva under construction, ca. 1924, by Albert J. Kopec. Standing on Evergreen Lane next to the large auditorium, the shadow of which is seen on the drive, Kopec photographed the gate at center, which is largely finished with the final plastering done and the wooden gates installed. The sidewalk in front, however, is not in and there is a pile of what appear to be adobe bricks. The low cement walls flanking the gate are not in either. Inside the walkway, the columns used for the wood supports for the grape vines are built, but not plastered. There is a fair amount of landscaping around the walls, however, including a palm tree, a fir tree and various bushes and shrubs. Behind the walkway can be seen portions of La Casa Nueva, including the tiled roof. A part of the courtyard is noticeably unfinished, particularly the end of the east portico in the courtyard. On the reverse toward the top in pencil is inscribed "Sept 28th 24", while below this at the center is a stamp reading "Kopec / L.A." With dented corners and some small stains and smearing on the reverse, but otherwise little indication of wear or damage, the artifact is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
